Animal Production Students Visit TARDI Animal Clinic

As part of the continuous efforts to align the Animal Production curriculum with industry practices, 2 nd year animal disease students visited TARDI (Tsolo Agricultural and Rural Development Institute) small and large animal clinic on 18 March 2026.

The visit which was led by Animal Health Senior Lecturer and specialist Samuel Thwane, is an on-going relationship with TARDI and is expected to continue benefitting our students with the practical exposure.

TARDI animal clinic plays an important role in supporting local famers through primary animal health care and disease control.

“During the visit, students were given a comprehensive tour of the clinic, including the examination rooms, X-ray unit, diagnostic laboratory and surgical (spaying) room. This exposure allowed them to better understand the workflow and operations within the animal clinic,” says Thwane.

“A highlight of the visit was the opportunity for our students to observe and participated
on live minor surgical procedure, an open castration on a bull using proper surgical
instruments, including an emasculator,” added Thwane.

The practical session covered several key learning areas, as students were introduced to various animal health equipment’s and their use, as well as different types of veterinary drugs. These included both stock remedies, which are accessible over the counter to farmers, and scheduled medications, which are strictly administered by qualified veterinarians.

In addition, TARDI’s Dr. Brandan performed a spaying procedure on a female dog, providing student with insight into reproductive management and surgical techniques used to prevent unwanted breeding.
