Facilities Management & Infrastructure Development
Purpose
The Facilities and Infrastructure Development component focuses on the maintenance, improvement, and development of the Institute’s physical facilities.
This includes overseeing infrastructure projects, building maintenance, and the coordination of services such as electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical maintenance.
The section also supports campus operations through the management of grounds maintenance, cleaning services, workshop activities, fleet coordination, and utilities related to water and facility upkeep.
The team responsible for infrastructure development works to ensure that institutional facilities remain functional, safe, and supportive of both teaching and learning activities.
Key Services
Fleet Management Services
PURPOSE:
Fleet Management service is responsible for management and maintenance of the institute’s vehicles.
The unit must ensure that the vehicles are safe, road-compliant, and insured.
It is also responsible for the Management of fuel usage and petrol cards.
Allocation of vehicles and/or trips to drivers and authorized personnel, is based on the submitted trip authorization form.
Fleet Vehicles:
Vehicles are allocated through submission of a valid trip authorization request to the fleet management supervisor.
A valid trip authorization request must be approved by the section head that is requesting the vehicle.
Vehicles are fitted with a tracker from Cartrack.
Servicing vehicles that are still under a service plan, is done as per the prescribed intervals and servicing of vehicles that are not on a service plan, is done by the institute’s mechanic.
Rules pertaining to the use of the institute’s vehicle are clearly defined and outlined in the fleet management policy.

Electrical Services
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this sub-unit is to deliver effective maintenance to the institute and implement
preventative maintenance measures, and this includes but not limited to the following:
- Inspect development action plan and report on the condition of the institute’s
electricity. - Read blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine the layout of institute’s electricity.
- Adhere to health and safety procedures.

Mechanical Services
PURPOSE:
Mechanical services is responsible for the maintenance, services and repairs of the institute’s vehicles, tractors, generators, machinery, implements and equipment.
The institute has two diesel generators as backup power:
- A 200KW diesel generator that supplies electricity at Old College and
- A 400KW diesel generator that supplies electricity at the New College.
The institute also has a Two Cylinder lister diesel engine and a Three Phase Electrical water pump.
Plumbing
PURPOSE:
Plumbing services is responsible for all plumbing fixtures that need to be repaired, maintained and installed in the institute.
The institute has six wastewater ponds to store and dispose of the waste.
Carpentry and General Building
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this job is to deliver effective building maintenance services to the Institute and implement preventative maintenance measures, and this includes but is not limited to the following:
- Inspect, develop an action plan and report on the condition of the institute buildings.
- Provide day-to-day maintenance of the institute buildings including student residences.
- Read blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine the layout of institute buildings and correctly interpret the drawings.
Duties:
Install, repair and maintain general building and fixtures.
The requests to address defects are submitted through a requisition form by the end user.
Grounds Services
PURPOSE:
To ensure that all grounds, gardens, sports fields and external works of the institute are kelp clean and always appealing to the staff and the public.
The section also ensures that all waste from the student residences, classrooms and offices is collected and disposed.
It is also responsible for movement of office furniture and setting up Mgolombane Hall for functions and events, including Graduations, Gala Dinners and Sport Awards.

Duties:
Grass cutting, waste collection, tree felling, gardening services, tractor operations and general work.
Cleaning Services
PURPOSE:
Ensuring that offices, student residences and ablutions for the staff and students are always clean.
OPERATIONS:
Sweeping, moping, polishing and stripping of all polished floors.
Dusting and polishing of the furniture, emptying all office dust bins, wiping window seals and cleaning of windowpanes when necessary.
Cleaning of the toilets and making sure that basins, sinks, showers and mirrors are clean.
Washing laundry (Fort Cox Centre for Entrepreneurship, Incubation and Rural Development linen, blankets and tablecloths) every day when they have Ad hoc activities.

DUTIES:
Provide day-to-day cleaning services to the institute’s premises.
ALLOCATIONS:
The are two cleaners stationed at Old College (Farm and Fort Cox Centre for Entrepreneurship, Incubation and Rural Development.
The cleaners at the New College are placed in the following manner:
5 at Admin Building,
2 at the Library and Information Services, 3 at Exams and Lab Complex,
2 at Nkosi Jongumsobomvu Maqoma Academic Centre, and
2 at the Workshop.
After cleaning the offices, all cleaners disperse to the student residences.
Rotation of the cleaners is done after every 3 months.
