Mr. Vusumzi Vernon Mpokeli is a distinguished member of the Fort Cox Alumni, Class of 1995 (28 years). In our esteemed alumni community, we are privileged to have senior professionals of Mr. Mpokeli’s stature and caliber.

His remarkable journey embodies the transformative power of resilience, education, and community engagement.

Born on October 22 and originating from humble beginnings in Luytville village, his path has been marked by his profound Influence as an educator and community leader.

His story stands as an inspiration to all those who encounter adversity along their own journeys.

Through his dedication, he empowers others and fosters lasting change, capturing the true essence of a visionary leader.

With roles at Heifer International and active involvement in the church, his life exemplifies a resolute commitment to making a positive impact.

His tireless efforts to uplift individuals, drive sustainable change, and create a brighter future for Eastern Cape communities are unwavering.

Through his leadership, expertise, and steadfast determination, he continues to inspire and uplift those fortunate enough to cross his path.

Vusumzi Vernon Mpokeli, a visionary with an unbroken commitment to community development, has traversed a path of extraordinary achievements and leadership.

Throughout his journey, he has consistently demonstrated his passion for empowering individuals and fostering sustainable change.

In his tenure as the Eastern Cape Provincial Manager at Heifer International South Africa (HISA) from November 2006 to July 2013, he played a pivotal role in transforming communities. Heifer International, a non-profit organization focused on agricultural interventions, aimed to assist families and communities in producing food and generating income. As the Provincial Manager, he ensured the smooth running of HISA’s programs in the Eastern Cape province.

His responsibilities included developing project proposals, implementing funded projects, monitoring their progress, marketing HISA, establishing partnerships with relevant stakeholders, and providing direction and leadership to the Eastern Cape team.

His duties encompassed a wide range of tasks, from approving projects that met Heifer’s criteria to conducting feasibility studies on approved projects.

He excelled in writing project proposals to various funders within South Africa and the Heifer International headquarters in the United States. Implementation of food security initiatives, both in crops and livestock, fell under his purview, and he diligently monitored each project’s progress.

Managing budgets, writing progress reports for funders and management, and forging partnerships with like-minded organizations were all integral to his role.

Additionally, he skillfully developed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) documents between Heifer and stakeholders in the province demonstrating his ability to foster collaboration.

Prior to his role as Provincial Manager, Mr Mpokeli served as an Agricultural Coordinator at Heifer International South Africa from 1999 to October 2006. He initially joined as a Volunteer Educator at Madiba High School in 1998, where he taught Agricultural Science and provided career guidance to grades 9-11 learners.

His dedication and expertise led to a promotion to the role of Educator in Adult Basic Education and Training, where he continued to make a positive impact on learners.

Mr Mpokeli’s passion for social facilitation and training in animal husbandry and crop production became evident during his time at Heifer International.

He provided technical assistance to project members, monitored projects, and conducted internal evaluations to ensure their success.

Notably, his commitment to personal and professional growth led him to participate in a volunteer program at Heifer Ranch in the United States in 2005, where he engaged in educational programs and farm management activities.

His exceptional contribution earned him the distinction of being the first South African to participate in this program in the history of Heifer International South Africa.

During the course of his career, Mpokeli has secured substantial funding for critical projects. In 2011, he successfully secured R2.6 million funding from the National Development Agency (NDA) to implement the Gqunu and Ngxakolo Food Security Project, benefiting 146 farmers in Qumbu, Mhlontlo Local Municipality.

He also played a pivotal role in obtaining R800,000 funding from the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the National Lottery for the Siphenathi Farming Project, benefitting 100 farmers in Bizana.

Outside his professional endeavors, Mpokeli is an active member of the Methodist Church of King William’s Town.

His dedication to service led to his election as the Circuit Steward, where he oversees the church’s operations and finance.

As a member of the Finance Committee, he authorizes payments and contributes to the strategic management of church resources.
